Loading 22-250

Recommended Posts

Getting ready to work up loads for my 22-250. I'll start with 60 gr SPs but expect to work up some 55 gr loads too. Any pet powders for these weights? Perhaps as important, having tracked OP's recent adventures, is it likely any of the powders in my gun closet are good choices? W760, H414 and H4831 are choices I currently have available that I can find load data for. Love to get your input, particularly if there is consensus on a great all around 22-250 powder. I'll be content tonight with priming cases and maybe, loading a little bit of 45 Colt.

For 60 grain SP , which is my pet load for a 22-250 I use 34.5 grains of Winchester 748 . Very accurate load in all my 250s . Win 760 is a good choice as well , that is what Kerry uses in his . This load is my Deer , Pig , Yote all around load , even been known to bust a few pasture maggots with it !

GDH:

I can't help you with the 22-250, but I can tell you that H4831 is a very good choice for my .243. I'll bet you can get some recipe from it that will shoot well in yours. And for some reason, rifle powder is more available than pistol powder, so you may be able to find what you are looking for. I've got some 748 also, but I can't find any loads for with it for any of my guns except my 30-30. Varget is my main powder at present, as it seems to load about anything. But I'll bet it's hard to find.

AR Comp and CFE223 both are recent new additions that work very well in the 22-250........ My AR Comp load with the 52gr Berger's are traveling so fast I don't even post it as no one would believe it anyway.

My favorite 22-250 load is

35.5 gr varget with a 52 gr Sierra BTHP. Muzzle velocity is around 3800 and my best 5 shot group at 100 measures .311 and is devastating on coyotes and cats!
