H60driver Report post Posted April 13, 2009 Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what's available as far as handgun shooting classes? A friend of mine and her husband would like to buy a handgun for self-defense. While I am a big proponent of self protection, neither of them know much at all about handguns. I suggested the normal handgun safety classes and that they take lessons for a while. I don't live close enough to them to take them shooting very often. Although, I grew up using guns, I feel like I got the best instruction on shooting when I had the chance to take some special shooting courses in the military. Most of these courses involved high stress shooting training (i.e. downed aircraft extraction, rapid target identification, etc). I know the police often have the opportunity to take similiar courses, but does anyone know if these are offered on the civilian side of the house? I would really like her to get the opportunity to take this type of training just because I know how different it is just target practicing versus being pumped up with adrenaline, distracted, and still having to defend yourself, etc. I'd even like to take another course for practice if I knew there were some good ones out there. Even though they are mostly concealed carry instructors, many will gladly offer handgun courses for folks just getting into the sport. Also try your local ranges. One other suggestion: have them visit with the instructor BEFORE buying a handgun. He/she can give them some good tips.
